plot summary
act 1

peribáñez , casilda celebrating wedding when learn comendador of ocaña has fallen while trying control raging bull. brought house, , casilda revives him unconsciousness. comendador falls in love beautiful casilda, , dismayed learn married. peribáñez , casilda enjoy wedded bliss, comendador s obsession casilda grows. married couple decides travel toledo feast day of assumption of mary, , comendador gives them tapestries decorate cart with. secretly follows them toledo, pays painter sketch picture of casilda without knowing, turned full-sized portrait later.


act 2

peribáñez , other members of brotherhood of saint roch, patron saint of ocaña, meet discuss state of disrepair icon of saint has fallen into. decided peribáñez should return toledo commission artist repair it. comendador conspires assistants, luján , leonardo, find ways seduce casilda. luján tells comendador tapestries gave couple hanging in bedroom, comendador takes sign of encouragement. luján decides try , seduce casilda s unwed cousin inés closer casilda. while peribáñez in toledo, various harvesters work him stay @ house. luján pretends one, , lets comendador house. comendador attempts seduce casilda, loves , loyal peribáñez , rejects him.

act 3

the comendador , leonardo discuss latest plan: king, enrique iii, has called forces battle against moors, , comendador appoint peribáñez captain of peasant forces, go off fight in war, leaving comendador free seduce casilda. peribáñez arrives , approaches comendador, asking him knight him may fight honor. comendador obliges, unwittingly elevating peasant own level , giving him right battle him. women give tokens men going off battle, , casilda gives husband black ribbon, protests bad omen. men leave war, , leonardo meets inés make arrangements let comendador casilda s house later. leonardo tries caution comendador plans do, ignored. attendants fetch him cape: black, ribbon given peribáñez , interpreted. attendants explain custom of wearing brightly colored cloaks known , wearing black 1 allow him go unrecognized, demands colored one.

when king hears of death of 1 of favored comendadors mere peasant, enraged, wife, queen, councils him hear peribáñez side of story. peribáñez humbles himself before king , explains happened. king pardons him , grants him title of captain, reward money posted capture of himself , wife, , right bear arms. queen gives casilda 4 dresses own wardrobe.
