nachod square , castle ca. 1740.


hron of náchod founded castle in mid 13th century. consisted of cylindrical tower , palace, typical of bergfried (keep) type. in 1544 zikmund smiricky bought domain in 1544 , rebuilt castle in renaissance style. when ottavio piccolomini got herrschaft of náchod in 1634, had castle renovated in baroque style design of architeects carlo lurago , giovanni battista pieroni. castle damaged swedish artillery during brief siege in 1639. result, fortifications boosted.

in 1721 storm damaged main castle tower , opportunity initiate renovation. in 1751 granary built in 1751 , french garden arranged on moat. theatre built in baroque fortifications in 1790s, when drama , music functions staged there 4 times week.


the castle served military hospital.during brief austro-prussian war in 1866. hosts museum today. exhibits include interesting collections prince ottavio piccolomini s time (e.g. tapestries). other sights include gothic cellars , observation tower (keep).
