in 1972, aris married aung san suu kyi, whom had met while @ university. married in buddhist ceremony. after spending year in bhutan, settled in north oxford, raised 2 sons, alexander aris , kim aris. during time, did postgraduate studies @ school of oriental , african studies, university of london , obtained phd in tibetan literature in 1978. in 1988, aung san suu kyi returned burma @ first care mother later lead country s pro-democracy movement. st john s college provided aris extended leave of absence fellow on full stipend lobby wife s cause.


in 1997, aris diagnosed prostate cancer later found terminal. several countries, prominent individuals , organisations, including united states government, united nations secretary general kofi annan , pope john paul ii, made appeals burmese authorities allow dr aris visa. burmese government not grant him visa visit burma, saying did not have facilities care him, , instead urged aung san suu kyi leave country visit him. @ time temporarily free house arrest unwilling depart, fearing refused re-entry if left, did not trust junta s assurance return.


aris died of prostate cancer on 53rd birthday in 1999, in oxford. after 1989, when wife first placed under house arrest, had seen 5 times, last of christmas in 1995, after suu kyi had been released first time.
