the united kingdom biodiversity action plan covers not terrestrial species associated lands within uk, marine species , migratory birds, spend limited time in uk or offshore waters. uk plan encompasses 391 species action plans, 45 habitat action plans , 162 local biodiversity action plans targeted actions . plan noteworthy because of extensive detail, clarity of endangerment mechanisms, specificity of actions, follow monitoring program , inclusion of migrating cetaceans , pelagic birds.
on august 28, 2007, new biodiversity action plan (bap) [launched in 1997] identified 1,149 species , 65 habitats in uk needed conservation , greater protection. updated list included hedgehog, house sparrow, grass snake , garden tiger moth, while otters, bottlenose dolphins , red squirrels remained in need of habitat protection.
in may 2011, european commission adopted new strategy halt loss of biodiversity , ecosystem services in eu 2020, in line commitments made @ 10th meeting of convention on biological diversity (cbd) held in nagoya, japan in 2010. in 2012 uk bap succeeded uk post-2010 biodiversity framework .
