the manufacturer of cherry twizzlers candy 1 of oldest confectionery firms in united states. company established in 1845 young , smylie, , adopted y&s trademark in 1870. national licorice company created in 1902 through merger of 3 small firms: young & smylie, s.v. & f.p. schudder , h.w. petherbridge. in 1908 plant opened in montreal , in 1929 twizzler brand established. company changed name y&s candies inc. in 1968 , acquired hershey foods in 1977.


since 1999, twizzlers have been manufactured in memphis, tennessee, main lancaster location, in y&s plant makes chewing gum , other candies. 1970 through 1999, manufactured @ plant in farmington, new mexico, relocated operation memphis because of rising transportation costs. according guinness book of records, longest licorice twist ever made measured 1,200 feet (370 m) , 100 pounds (45 kg) , made @ y&s candy plant in lancaster, pennsylvania. record-breaking twist became guinness world record, on july 19, 1998.
