in 1915, senate amusement company of philadelphia planned build ocean-side attraction in seaside heights within feet of border seaside park. plan build covered pier house carousel. structure built in 1915 under direction of joseph vanderslice of senate amusement company. budget issues stalled project in 1916, , amusement ride , building subsequently sold frank freeman. combination of completion of toms river bridge on october 23, 1914, , dupont avenue carousel , boardwalk led 159% population growth shown between 1920 , 1930 censuses in seaside heights.


disasters

on june 9, 1955, malfunctioning neon sign component caused fire @ shop on corner of ocean terrace , dupont avenue. fire driven winds estimated @ 50 miles per hour (80 km/h), blowing fire south , engulfing entire pier. fire stopped @ stockton avenue due in part fact boardwalk , pier ended there. in became known freeman s fire, total of 85 buildings destroyed estimated $4 million in damage.



star jet roller coaster in atlantic ocean after hurricane sandy


beginning on october 29, 2012, substantial portions of boardwalk damaged , of borough flooded result of hurricane sandy. both funtown pier , casino pier suffered major damage, sections of both piers torn apart powerful storm surges , waves causing many of rides collapse ocean. curfew set @ 4:00 pm prevent looting, new year s eve party held @ beachcomber hundreds of area residents @ arrival of 2013 celebrated @ 3:00 in afternoon. casino pier began cleanup attempts after, in attempt reopen in time summer 2013 season. star jet roller coaster fell water casino pier had become attraction in itself. taken apart wrecker weeks marine on may 14, 2013, short time after prince harry of wales visit site same day governor chris christie. repairs boardwalk completed on june 21, 2013, new jersey s first lady, mary pat christie, hammering nail final board of project.


on september 12, 2013, ten-alarm fire swept funtown pier northward. fire believed have started under boardwalk, below kohr s kustard stand @ southern end of pier. wind pushed northward, , fire crews able make stand @ lincoln avenue tearing newly replaced boardwalk had been destroyed less year before hurricane sandy. jack & bill s bar , kohr s kustard 2 businesses both destroyed in 1955 , 2013 fires.
