in 2011, part of ethnographic study, de rond spent 6 weeks observing army surgeons @ work in camp bastion, main british military base in afghanistan , largest british overseas military base built since world war two. de rond prepared deployment there uk-based training, , deployment result of 2 years work , training military.


de rond described trip old fashioned attempt @ trying understand teams living them under similar conditions , work @ bastion: wanted see how staff @ bastion coped going on around them, how team functioned under pressure. there observe , record going on, but, of course, not being affected myself. difficult seeing child missing leg, or teenage soldier double amputee.


during deployment, de rond given permission film , photograph surgeons @ work dealt ied bomb casualties british , american forces , local adult , children casualties caused ieds , in firefights in areas surrounding camp.
