ireland qualified euro 2016 following play-off victory on bosnia , herzegovina. in group stages drew 1–1 sweden, having taken lead through wes hoolahan strike, before being beaten 3–0 belgium in following game. however, 1–0 victory on italy in final game, courtesy of late header robbie brady, earned side spot in round of 16, first time team had ever advanced group stage @ european championship. in round of 16, ireland faced hosts france and, after taking lead through brady penalty, beaten 2–1.
