types of cues
depth
the ability perceive world in 3 dimensions , estimate size , distance object depends heavily on depth cues. 2 major depth cues, stereopsis , motion parallax, both rely on parallax difference between perceived position of object given 2 different viewpoints. in stereopsis distance between eyes source of 2 different viewpoints, resulting in binocular disparity. motion parallax relies head , body movement produce necessary viewpoints.
motion
the visual system can detect motion both using simple mechanism based on information multiple clusters of neurons aggregate through integrating multiple cues including contrast, form, , texture. 1 major source of visual information when determining self-motion optic flow. optic flow not indicates whether agent moving in direction , @ relative speed.
biological motion
humans in particular have evolved particularly keen ability detect if motion being generated biological source, point light displays dots representing joints of animal. recent research suggests mechanism can reveal gender, emotional state, , action of given human light point model.
color
the ability distinguish between colors allows organism , recognize danger since many brightly colored plants , animals pose kind of threat, harboring kind of toxin. color serves inferential cue can prime both motor action , interpretation of persuasive message.
contrast
contrast, or difference in luminance and/or color helps make object distinguishable, important in edge detection , serves cue.
