3s-gte

toyota 3s-gte engine.


the 3s-gte in-line 4-cylinder 1998 cc engine toyota, based on 3s-ge addition of under piston oil squirters , reduced compression ratio accommodate addition of turbocharger.


there 4 generations of engine, started manufacture in 1986 , built until 2007. turbochargers used in 3s-gte engines toyota designs , use internal wastegate design. depending on engine intended sold exhaust turbine either ceramic (japan) or steel (us , australia). fitted mr2, toyota celica gt-four, , caldina gt-t , gt-four.



its cylinders numbered 1-2-3-4, cylinder number 1 beside timing belt. dual on head cam (dohc) 16-valve cylinder head designed yamaha made of aluminum alloy. pent-roof combustion chambers complemented cross flow intake , exhaust layout. spark plugs located in middle of combustion chambers. distributor based system used fire cylinders in 1-3-4-2 order.


the crankshaft, located within crankcase, rotates on 5 aluminum alloy bearings , balanced 8 weights. oil holes located in middle of crankshaft provide oil connecting rods, bearing, pistons , various other components.


a single timing belt drives intake , exhaust camshaft along oil , water pumps. cam journal supported on 5 points between valve lifters of each cylinder , on front of cylinder head. cam journals lubricated oiler port located in middle of camshaft. adjust valve clearance in first 2 generations, shim on bucket system employed. in following generations shim under bucket system used.


the pistons made aluminum alloy designed withstand high temperatures. indentation incorporated pistons prevent pistons hitting valves if timing belt breaks. piston pins holding pistons in place locked snap rings.


the first compression ring , oil ring made of steel, second compression ring made of cast iron. compression ring 1 , 2, prevents gas leakages combustion chamber while oil ring works clear oil off cylinder walls, preventing excessive oil entering combustion chamber.


first generation

the first-generation toyota ct26 utilized single entry turbine housing , single wastegate port design. fitted first generation st165 toyota celica gt-four. intake charge cooled water-to-air intercooler , intake manifold design toyota s t-vis. has 8 independent ports , benefits inertia build improve engine torque @ low , medium speeds closing 4 ports below rpm , throttle position increase air speed , maximize fuel atomization , opening 8 @ higher engine loads better air volume. air metering through air flow meter , there no factory bpv/bov in generation. fuel delivery through 430cc injectors while air fed through 55mm throttle body , 7.15mm intake , exhaust valve lift. compression ratio 8.5:1 , produces 182-190hp , 190 lb-ft factory 8-9psi of boost. fuel cut @ 12psi.


second generation

a second-generation 3s-gte


the second-generation toyota ct26 used twin entry turbine housing dual wastegate ports. fitted second generation st185 toyota celica gt-four sw20 mr2 turbo. intake charge cooled air-to-air intercooler either top-mounted in celica or side-mounted in mr2. rally homologation celica (known group rallye in australia, rc in japan , carlos sainz limited edition in europe) used top-mounted water-to-air intercooler , distinguished hood vent rather hood scoop found in non-homologation st185s. generation retains t-vis intake manifold , air flow meter. factory bpv included in sw20 mr2 turbo not on celicas. compression ratio 8.8:1 , produces 200-232hp , 200-224 lb-ft. generation retains injector size , throttle body size previous generation. however, boost increased 10-11psi in st185 , mr2 while increased 16psi in st185rc. intake , exhaust valve lift increased 8.2mm. generation known infamous hose hell (hfh) , hose hell on earth (hfhoe) 2 small coolant hoses known require replacement sometime after 100k miles , sandwiched in directions components.


third generation

the third-generation engine uses (enthusiast-dubbed) toyota ct20b turbo, of same design second-generation improved turbine housing , larger compressor wheel. factory bpv installed on applications. intake charge cooled water-to-air top-mounted intercooler similar in shape st185rc wta. 1 can tell difference st205 wta black while st185 wta silver black centre. generation away t-vis , uses normal 4 runner intake same port shape , size na engine (but larger injector holes side feed). air flow meter removed in favor of map sensing system (prior generations used map sensor purpose of factory boost gauge , determining overboost fuel cut). various increases included injector size (540cc), boost (13psi), overboost fuel cut limit (18psi), intake cam lift (8.7mm), throttle body size (60mm), , 10mm increase in exhaust ports. exhaust valve lift retained @ 8.2mm. in late 1997, block casting revised added support around head prevent block cracking problems. ct20b turbo found in generation backwards compatible second generation motors, not first generation. further improvements include factory oil catch can. compression reduced down 8.5:1 power improved 245-255ps(242-251hp) , 304 n·m (224 lb-ft).


fourth generation

the fourth-generation engine uses proprietary ct15b turbocharger. generation used in 1997-2002 st215 caldina gt-t awd wagon. exhaust housing cast cylinder exhaust manifold, rather normal practice of separate turbine housing after cylinder exhaust manifold. due this, ct15 backwards compatible third-generation 3s-gte cylinder head only, not either first or second generation. intake charge cooled air-to-air top-mounted intercooler fed through new side-feed intake manifold. generation utilizes coil-on-plug ignition system , 550cc injectors. boost remains @ 13-14psi, overboost fuel cut increased 21psi. compression increased 9:1 , produces 260ps (256 hp) , 324n·m (239 lb-ft).


fifth generation

the fifth-generation engine uses same turbo fourth generation model. generation used in 2002-2007 st246 caldina gt-four awd wagon. there minor differences engine compared previous version , due limited markets receiving st246, little known , few aware of engine. differences include longer of injectors closer intake ports. intake manifold returns center-feed type fed air-to-air top-mounted intercooler. intercooler smaller previous generation , oriented different of previous generations. tilted more towards front of car. coil-on-plug ignition different in generation , not compatible st215 ecu. valve cover different first time in 3s-gte series oil filler hole on top of exhaust camshaft instead of intake. other differences include first time there no oil cooler in generation obd2 diagnostics. despite downsize in various components of generation, power retained @ 260ps (256 hp) , 324n·m (239 lb-ft).
