the first session of qualifying passed without incident 6 drivers 3 new teams (timo glock , lucas di grassi of virgin, jarno trulli , heikki kovalainen of lotus , bruno senna , karun chandhok of hrt) knocked out expected. kovalainen had spin on snatched brake heading corner, locked wheels , spun off circuit. joined in elimination force india s vitantonio liuzzi, blamed traffic slow time.


in second session, of usual contenders eliminated once again, both williams drivers (rubens barrichello , nico hülkenberg), both toro rossos (jaime alguersuari , sébastien buemi) , both saubers (kamui kobayashi , pedro de la rosa) joined vitaly petrov s renault. michael schumacher eliminated, squeezing through in final seconds 3 hundredths of second, @ expense of barrichello. hülkenberg blamed mistake @ last corner lowly grid position, compared fifth in previous race.


the final qualifying session saw lower grid positions expected several drivers, including germans michael schumacher , adrian sutil, came 9th , 10th respectively. force india man, however, seemed happy grid slot. said, q3 qualifying... think can pleased. mercedes driver, contrast, less pleased, claiming struggled rear grip, problem had been having problems weekend. robert kubica did in renault qualify eighth, behind ferrari of felipe massa, driver unhappy performance. blamed final corner mistake. mclarens of jenson button (5th) , lewis hamilton (6th) both underachieved compared expectations after practice. team principal martin whitmarsh said expected drivers better. nico rosberg did qualify fourth in second mercedes, , other ferrari of fernando alonso performed well, qualifying third. however, red bull cars of sebastian vettel , mark webber stole show, locking out front row of grid. vettel stole pole position teammate webber 3 tenths of second in closing moments of session. christian horner, red bull sporting director described vettel s lap phenomenal , , delighted @ fourth consecutive red bull pole.
