gougane barra
born in templemartin, near bandon, , named lóchán (modern form, loan), son of amergin of maigh seóla. studied in ossory, corresponding approximately present county kilkenny. renamed fionnbharra (fairhead in irish), reportedly when, on being tonsured, presiding cleric remarked: fionn barr (find barr, in irish of time) lócháin , meaning, fair crest of loan ), , became known findbarr ( fionnbarra in modern irish). went on pilgrimage rome of monks, visiting st david in wales on way back.
on completion of education returned home , lived time on island in small lake called loch irce. island called gougane barra (the little rock-fissure of finnbarr). reputed have built small churches in various other places, including 1 in ballineadig, county cork, called cell na cluaine, anglicized cellnaclona , referred cloyne, causing confused cloyne (cluain uamha) in east cork.
