in vietnam war, combat controllers helped assure mission safety , expedited air traffic flow during countless airlifts. combat controllers flew forward air guides in support of indigenous forces in laos , cambodia. has been reported combat controllers conducted covert forward air control u.s. , allied aircraft performing interdiction missions against communist troops , supplies on ho chi minh trail.
as tactical air strikes began used in laos, became apparent safety of noncombatants, means of control necessary. beginning @ least july 1964, absence of close air support control system caused variety of enterprising individuals improvise procedures marking bombing targets. @ various times, ground markers (including bamboo arrows) , dropped smoke grenades used. while of these individuals had military training, such american army attaché, others had little or no specialized training in close air support. varied in nationality, being thai, lao, or hmong, american. both continental air services, inc , air america pilots serve ad hoc forward air controllers.
