Symbols Sandinista National Liberation Front

us marines captured flag of augusto césar sandino, nicaragua, 1932

the flag of fsln consists of upper half in red, lower half in black, , letters f s l n in white. modified version of flag sandino used in 1930s, during war against u.s. occupation of nicaragua consisted of 2 vertical stripes, equally in size, 1 red , other black skull (like traditional jolly roger flag). these colors came mexican anarchist movements sandino involved during stay in mexico in 1920s. (the traditional flag of anarcho-syndicalism, joins diagonally red color of labour movement , black color of anarchism, in flag of cnt, negation of nationalism , reaffirmation of internationalism.)

in recent times, there has been dispute between fsln , dissident sandinista renovation movement (mrs) use of red , black flag in public activities. although mrs has own flag (orange silhouette of sandino s hat in black), use red-and-black flag in honor of sandino s legacy. state red-and-black flag symbol of sandinismo whole, not of fsln party.
