on 14 january 1966, soldiers of igbo extraction led major chukwuma kaduna nzeogwu, igbo okpanam near asaba, present day delta state, eradicated uppermost echelon of politicians northern , western provinces.this , other factors led fall of republican government. though aguiyi-ironsi, igbo, purportedly slated assassination, took control of lagos, federal capital territory. president igbo nnamdi azikiwe refusing intervene , insure continuity of civilian rule, aguiyi-ironsi @ gun point forced remaining members of balewa s government resign, made senate president nwafor orizu, igbo serving acting president in azikiwe s absence, officially surrender power him, staging coup of own , ending first nigerian republic.
