after failed plans marriage between prince william , princess alice of united kingdom, second daughter of queen victoria, prince fell in love 19-year-old countess mathilde von limburg-stirum in 1873. relationship between prince , parents became problematic, parents refused william s wish accept mathilde bride in 1874. standards of dutch royal family, marriage between member of royal family , member of nobility considered unequal , therefore unacceptable. rumour circulated mathilda illegitimate daughter of king william iii , william marrying half-sister. 33-year-old william wanted marry, if necessary, without consent of parents. however, mathilda not yet twenty , permission needed parents too. since denied permission, prince s attempt marry mathilda failed.
