in 2007 mollema won prestigious stage race upcoming talents tour de l avenir , circuito montañés.

rabobank (2008–2014)
2008–2009

he joined rabobank proteam in 2008, signing first contract professional. first notable result 6th position in final classification of 2008 vuelta castilla y león. made protour debut in tour de romandie, did not finish race due fall, resulted in fractured collarbone. returned in top shape in deutschland tour, in started rabobank s team leader, finishing 7th in overall general classification. after disappointing spring in 2009, season on mollema due infectious mononucleosis (pfeiffer s disease).

2010

mollema made grand tour debut in giro d italia in made impression fell short of top 10 classification , winning young rider competition, partially due missing out on break-away of 50 riders in lot of direct opponents gained 12 minutes lead. mollema continued ride strong later in season mountain stage win in tour de pologne , third place overall after winner dan martin , runner-up grega bole.

2011

in spring of 2011 showed form ninth place overall in paris–nice , tenth overall in volta catalunya. did not show form in ardennes classics , rode disappointing results. main objective of mollema s 2011 season first ever tour de france. preparation tour rode, teammate steven kruijswijk, tour de suisse. both riders performed extremely in strong field. resulted kruijswijk in podium finish mollema fell short podium due flat tyre. due illness general classification performance in tour de france not success. in last week stated felt better , tried break-away. resulted in second place in 17th stage after edvald boasson hagen of team sky.

mollema returned action in third grand tour, vuelta españa. on steep uphill finishes in stage 5 , 8 finished in top five. did not lose crucial time in first week , awarded red leader s jersey after second place in stage 9. due weaker time trial skills compared other general classification contenders such bradley wiggins, chris froome , vincenzo nibali, lost leader s jersey day after had won it. mollema rode after time trial , heading podium position, fell fourth place overall due performance of juan josé cobo on alto de l angliru. mollema came onto podium in madrid winner of points classification. first time since 1992 dutchman won major classification in grand tour, after eddy bouwmans won young rider classification in tour de france.

2013

in 2013, mollema carried form finishing 2nd in vuelta murcia, 3rd in vuelta andalucía, , 4th in criterium international. in tour de suisse, mollema won stage 2 marking first victory in 2013. after having strong ride in mountains, mollema entered final time trial in 4th position. later moved 2nd day. mollema s form continued @ tour de france, finished fourth on first mountain stage ax 3 domaines rise fourth in general classification. finished eighth on next stage , rose third overall after richie porte lost more 18 minutes. on stage 13 rose second in general classification when alejandro valverde lost 10 minutes after suffering puncture approximately 80 kilometres (50 miles) left, while gaining on minute on froome s lead. however, lost time in last week due illness , finished 6th in general classification. mollema rode vuelta españa. won stage 17 of race attacking peloton 500 metres line, , holding off chasing pack led home edvald boasson hagen (team sky).

2014

at tour de france, mollema sat seventh overall heading penultimate stage, individual time trial 54 kilometres (34 miles) in length. however, riding new bianchi first time, mollema place in 140th position , slipped tenth overall in general classification, 21 minutes , 24 seconds behind winner, vincenzo nibali.

2015

in march 2015, mollema finished second overall behind nairo quintana (movistar team) @ tirreno–adriatico. however, subsequently suffered injury affected tour de france preparations. mollema went on finish seventh overall in tour.

2016

mollema @ 2017 tour de france

on stage 12 of tour de france, mollema bridged across attack race leader chris froome (team sky) , richie porte (bmc racing team) on mont ventoux, , general classification contender able so. however, 3 riders involved in crash motorbike after spectators on road forced motorbike stop. mollema able remount bike , continued riding, while porte delayed , passed other general classification contenders , froome ditched bike , continued on foot until receiving replacement bike team car. mollema finished stage 1 minute , 40 seconds ahead of froome, , initial standings placed mollema in second overall behind new leader adam yates (orica–bikeexchange). however, froome awarded same time mollema after jury decision, , retained yellow jersey. revised standings placed nairo quintana ahead of mollema, fourth overall. mollema criticised uci s handling of stage afterwards. on stage 13, mollema produced described best time trial of life place sixth on hilly route on 37.5 kilometres (23.3 miles). finished 51 seconds down on froome, took time out of other general classification contenders , rose second overall. fell eleventh overall end of race.
