history
1996–1999: formation , first years

chris martin , jonny buckland first met during orientation week @ university college london (ucl) in september 1996. pair spent rest of university year planning band, forming group called pectoralz. guy berryman, classmate of martin , buckland, later joined group. 1997, group, had renamed starfish, performed gigs local camden promoters @ small clubs. martin had recruited longtime school friend phil harvey, studying classics @ university of oxford, band s manager. coldplay have since accepted harvey fifth member of group. band s line-up completed when champion joined take percussion duties. champion had grown playing piano, guitar, bass, , tin whistle; learned drums (despite having no previous experience). band settled on name coldplay suggested tim crompton, local student had been using name group.
