the city situated in foothills of great smoky mountains, outermost of which, chilhowee mountain, rises few miles south. large sections of north-central , northeastern parts of range visible alcoa highway. little river, rises near heart of smokies, flows through eastern section of alcoa before emptying tennessee river near louisville.


according united states census bureau, city has total area of 15.6 square miles (40.5 km), of 14.7 square miles (38.2 km) land , 0.93 square miles (2.4 km), or 5.90%, water.
