the city of columbia has council-manager form of government. mayor , city council elected every 4 years, no term limits. elections held in spring of numbered years. unlike other mayors in council-manager systems, columbia mayor has power veto ordinances passed council; vetoes can overridden two-thirds majority of council, appoints city manager serve chief administrative officer. current mayor stephen k. benjamin, succeeded longtime mayor , fellow democrat bob coble in 2010. teresa wilson current city manager.


the city council consists of 6 members, 4 districts , 2 elected at-large. city council responsible making policies , enacting laws, rules, , regulations in order provide future community , economic growth, in addition providing necessary support orderly , efficient operation of city services.
