born in logroño, la rioja, nonetheless product of athletic bilbao s famed youth academy @ lezama, aranzubia made first-team debut on 10 june 2001 in 1–3 home derby loss against real sociedad. after 2 seasons backup iñaki lafuente, emerged side s undisputed starter, helping them qualify uefa cup in 2004 while extending contract further 4 years.

on 13 july 2008, aranzubia joined deportivo de la coruña on three-year deal, helping galicians uefa intertoto cup , starting throughout entire season, save 1 match due suspension. on 2 october, saved 3 penalties in shootout against sk brann in uefa cup first round 2–0 home win, depor reaching group stage.


aranzubia missed first 6 games of 2010–11 campaign due injury, again finished starter deportivo. on 20 february 2011, scored head after 95th-minute corner kick team managed 1–1 draw @ ud almería, becoming first goalkeeper in la liga history score open play.


atlético madrid

in august 2013, aranzubia signed atlético madrid backup thibaut courtois. made debut in uefa champions league on 11 december 2013 shortly after 34th birthday, saving penalty fc porto s josué in eventual 2–0 group stage home win.


as belgian unavailable due injury, aranzubia first played in league colchoneros on 8 february 2014, being sent off in last minutes of eventual 0–2 loss @ almería after fouling jonathan zongo in box.
