india has traditionally enjoyed friendly relations afghanistan. despite that, india supported soviet invasion , occupation of afghanistan. relations deteriorated after taliban took power in 1996. india unofficially supported northern alliance minority groups against pakistani-backed taliban. during course of hijack of indian airlines flight 814 in 1999, taliban requested recognition india in exchange in negotiations. request not acted upon indian government. after fall of taliban in late 2001, india strengthened ties islamic republic of afghanistan establishing consulates in major afghan cities. embassy of india located in kabul.
