the puerco river headwaters on western slopes of continental divide of americas, 0.5 miles (0.80 km) east of hosta butte, in mckinley county, new mexico. flows first north, , west, through wide , barren desert valley bordered high rocky buttes , cliffs. passes under interstate 40, , receives south fork puerco river right-south near gallup. of remaining course, i-40 , former atchison, topeka , santa fe railway (now bnsf railway) tracks follow river s valley.


the puerco river crosses apache county, arizona. flows houck, sanders, , chambers, , flows through middle of petrified forest national park, lithodendron wash enters left-north. river flows southwest confluence little colorado river, near eastern side of holbrook.
