geography

columbia, located in northern mid-missouri, 120 miles (190 km) away both st. louis , kansas city, , 29 miles (47 km) north of state capital of jefferson city. city near missouri river, between ozark plateau , northern plains.


according united states census bureau, city has total area of 63.5 square miles (164.46 km) of 63.08 square miles (163.38 km) land , 0.42 square miles (1.09 km) water.


topography

the city slopes highest point in northeast lowest point in southwest towards missouri river. prominent tributaries of river perche creek, hinkson creek, , flat branch creek. along these , other creeks in area can found large valleys, cliffs, , cave systems such in rock bridge state park south of city. these creeks largely responsible numerous stream valleys giving columbia hilly terrain similar ozarks while having prairie flatland typical of northern missouri. columbia operates several greenbelts trails , parks throughout town.


animal life

large mammals found in city includes urbanized coyotes, red foxes, , numerous whitetail deer. eastern gray squirrel, , other rodents abundant, cottontail rabbits , nocturnal opossum , raccoon. large bird species abundant in parks , include canada goose, mallard duck, shorebirds, including great egret , great blue heron. turkeys common in wooded areas , can seen on mkt recreation trail. populations of bald eagles found missouri river. city on mississippi flyway, used migrating birds, , has large variety of small bird species, common eastern u.s. eurasian tree sparrow, introduced species, limited in north america counties surrounding st. louis. columbia has large areas of forested , open land , many of these areas home wildlife.
