in 1863, when king leopold of belgium suffering kidney stones, thompson called brussels consult in case, , after difficulties allowed perform operation of lithotripsy. successful, , in recognition of skill thompson appointed surgeon-extraordinary king, appointment continued léopold ii. ten years later thompson carried out similar operation on former emperor napoléon iii; however, emperor died 4 days after, not surgical procedure, proved post-mortem examination, uremia.


in 1874 thompson helped in founding cremation society of great britain, of first president; did toward removal of legal restrictions on cremation. denounced prevailing methods of death certification in great britain; , in 1892 select committee appointed inquire matter; report, published following year, in line thinking. woking crematorium became first of kind in uk. thompson s last public duty society, in 1903, open birmingham crematorium, country s ninth. died in april 1904; body cremated @ golders green crematorium, first in london, had opened in 1902.
