consulship
in 461 bc, consul publius volumnius amintinus gallus. terms occurred during period of political tensions between tribunes of plebs, demanded rights of consuls written down (drafted in lex terentilia) , conservative patricians opposed limitations consular power.
the consuls tried raise troops against aequi , volsci, traditional enemies of rome. tribunes used veto block levy. 4 of tribunes called people vote on legal draft (the lex terentilia). consuls refused preside on ballot , young patricians provoked trouble. political process paralysed of year result. in context aulus verginius, 1 of plebeian tribunes, brought young caeso quinctius trial on capital charge of obstructing tribunes of plebs based on testimony of marcus volscius fictor.
decemvirate
in 454 bc, patricians , tribunes of plebs came compromise , senate approved sending delegation of 3 senators, among them servius sulpicius, athens , southern italy in order study greek law. livy refers publius sulpicius being member of delegation. however, given decemvirs in first decemvirate appear former consuls, seems probable servius sulpicius member of delegation well.
the 3 roman ambassadors returned in 452 bc , report gave senate led creation of extraordinary office, decemviri consulari imperio legibus scribonis (decemviri writing law consular power). in 451 bc, servius sulpicius in office while on first commission of decemvirs , participated in drafting first ten of twelve tables.

in 449 bc, second decemvirate had stayed in power illegally, contrary of patricians , plebeians. armies sent combat aequi , sabines, commanded 8 of ten decemvirs, revolted, returning rome , assembling on monte sacro, demanded decemvirs step down. consuls servius sulpicius, spurius tarpeius, , gaius julius had envoys negotiate plebs had left city. finally, decemvirs left positions, 8 went exile while 2 prosecuted in court, took own lives during process.

in 446 bc, servius sulpicius have been legate under orders of consuls titus quinctius capitolinus barbatus , agrippa furius fusus during campaign conducted against volsci.
