biography

brabourne born in 1924, second son of michael knatchbull, 5th baron brabourne , wife, lady doreen knatchbull. educated @ eton college , brasenose college, oxford. hardly 14 when father died in february 1939 , elder brother, norton, inherited barony.

the second world war broke out brabourne finishing school, , enlisted in armed forces. served in coldstream guards, rising rank of captain. fought in france 1944 onwards. in 1943, elder brother, norton, lieutenant in grenadier guards, wounded , captured in italy. while being transported germany pow, tried escape, captured , executed ss on 15 september 1943. since died childless, barony passed younger brother, john knatchbull, became 7th lord brabourne.


marriage

at end of war, brabourne returned england , settled in family seat, mersham in kent. on 26 october 1946, @ romsey abbey in hampshire, @ age of 21, married patricia mountbatten, eldest daughter of louis mountbatten, 1st viscount mountbatten, later 1st earl mountbatten of burma. brabourne s best man @ wedding squadron leader charles harris-st. john.


lady brabourne inherit father s peerages in due course. make lord , lady brabourne among few married couples each hold peerages in own right. also, lady brabourne related british royal family, , aunt louise mountbatten @ time crown princess (later queen) of sweden. in february 1947, months after wedding, brabourne s father-in-law appointed viceroy of india. newly-wed couple spent several months in india, residing parents in viceregal palace. in november same year, lady brabourne s first cousin philip, duke of edinburgh wed princess elizabeth, future queen of united kingdom.

career , service

in late 1940s, shortly after leaving army, brabourne began working assistant production manager television productions, based on war-related themes. graduated role of production manager 1950s, , became producer in own right in 1958, harry black romantic story set in india, war distant context. followed sink bismarck! in 1960. war, empire , india recurrent themes in work, , passage india (1984) among acclaimed works. filmography includes murder on orient express (1974), death on nile (1978), , little dorrit (1988).


in 1970, founded mersham productions, production house named after family seat in kent, produced many of works thereafter. served director of thames television (later chairman) , euston films 1978 1995, , director of thorn emi 1981 1986.


john brabourne received 2 academy award nominations best picture, producer of romeo , juliet (1968) , passage india. in 1979, brabourne invested fellow of british film institute. in 1993, made commander of order of british empire.

despite busy career, brabourne country gentleman, , took local responsibilities seriously. served governor of various schools, including norton knatchbull school (founded ancestor c.1630 ad) 1947 2000; wye agricultural college in kent 1955 2000, , gordonstoun school 1964 1994. served pro-chancellor of university of kent 1993 1999.


the ira bombing

on 27 august 1979, while family on holiday in mullaghmore, county sligo, lord brabourne s father-in-law, earl mountbatten of burma, took number of family members out lobstering on motorboat, shadow v, in donegal bay. having planned murder mountbatten, irish republican army (ira) placed bomb inside boat on night of 26th. mountbatten , several members of party killed next morning when bomb triggered ira observer onshore armed radio detonator. dead included brabourne s 83-year-old mother, dowager baroness brabourne, 1 of twin 14-year-old sons, nicholas knatchbull, , local boy, 15-year-old paul maxwell county fermanagh had been hired summer mountbatten s boat boy. brabourne, wife patricia, , other twin son timothy severely injured, survived attack.


lord brabourne died in 2005 @ home in kent @ age of 80. survived wife , 7 remaining children.
