in first half of 2011, u.s.-led war in afghanistan again brought yet higher numbers of civilian deaths violence intensified , security spiralled downward. according unama/aihrc figures, 1,462 afghan civilians killed in first 6 months of 2011, 15% jump on same period in 2010. unama/aihrc attributed 1,167 (79.8%) of deaths having been caused insurgents , anti-government elements, 28% same period in 2010. unama/aihrc attributed 207 afghan civilian deaths having been caused u.s.-led military forces, down 9% same period in 2010 , representing 14.2% of civilian deaths. in 6% of civilian deaths, unama , aihrc unable attribute cause 1 side.
for whole year of 2011, united nations reported civilian death toll numbered 3,021, record high. in addition, 4,507 afghans wounded.
the use of improvised explosive devices (ieds) increased, average of 23 roadside bombs day detonated, discovered, or defused. suicide attacks became more complex , sophisticated, targeted killings intensified, ground fighting increased, , civilian deaths airstrikes increased.
