kandyan dances (uda rata natum)

ves dance

ves dance, popular, originated ancient purification ritual, kohomba yakuma or kohomba kankariya. dance propitiatory, never secular, , performed males. elaborate ves costume, particularly headgear, considered sacred , believed belong deity kohomba.


only toward end of 19th century ves dancers first invited perform outside precincts of kankariya temple @ annual kandy perahera festival. today elaborately costumed ves dancer epitomizes kandyan dance.


naiyandi dance

dancers in naiyandi costume perform during initial preparations of kohomba kankariya festival, during lighting of lamps , preparation of foods demons. dancer wears white cloth , white turban, beadwork decorations on chest, waistband, rows of beads around neck, silver chains, brass shoulder plates, anklets, , jingles. graceful dance, performed in maha visnu (vishnu) , kataragama devales temples on ceremonial occasions.


uddekki dance

uddekki prestigious dance. name comes uddekki, small lacquered hand drum in shape of hourglass, 7 , half inches (18 centimeters) high, believed have been given people gods. 2 drumskins believed have been given god iswara, , sound visnu; instrument said have been constructed according instructions of sakra , played in heavenly palace of gods. difficult instruments play. dancer sings plays, tightening strings obtain variations of pitch.


pantheru dance

the pantheruwa instrument dedicated goddess pattini. resembles tambourine (without skin) , has small cymbals attached @ intervals around circumference. dance said have originated in days of prince siddhartha, became buddha. gods believed use instrument celebrate victories in war, , sinhala kings employed pantheru dancers celebrate victories in battlefield. costume similar of uddekki dancer, pantheru dancer wears no beaded jacket , substitutes silk handkerchief @ waist elaborate frills of uddekki dancer.

the word vannam comes sinhala word varnana (descriptive praise). ancient sinhala texts refer considerable number of vannams sung; later adapted solo dances, each expressing dominant idea. history reveals kandyan king sri weeraparakrama narendrasinghe gave considerable encouragement dance , music. in kavikara maduwa (a decorated dance arena) there song , poetry contests.


it said kavi (poems sung music) eighteen principal vannams composed old sage named ganithalankara, of buddhist priest kandy temple. vannams inspired nature, history, legend, folk religion, folk art, , sacred lore, , each composed , interpreted in mood (rasaya) or expression of sentiment. eighteen classical vannams gajaga ( elephant ), thuranga ( horse ), mayura ( peacock ), gahaka ( conch shell ), uranga ( crawling animals ), mussaladi ( hare ), ukkussa ( eagle ), vyrodi ( precious stone ), hanuma ( monkey ), savula ( cock ), sinharaja ( lion ), naga ( cobra ), kirala ( red-wattled lapwing ), eeradi ( arrow ), surapathi (in praise of goddess surapathi), ganapathi (in praise of god ganapathi), uduhara (expressing pomp , majesty of king), , assadhrusa (extolling merit of buddha). these added samanala ( butterfly ), bo (the sacred bo tree @ anuradhapura, sapling of original bo tree under buddha attained enlightenment), , hansa vannama ( swan ). vannama dance tradition has 7 components: dog dance, cat dance, lion dance, ostrich dance, parrot dance, etc.
