Medical uses Dimercaptosuccinic acid

dimercaptosuccinic acid indicated treatment of lead poisoning in children blood level measured above 45 µg/dl. use of dmsa not approved prevention of lead poisoning in anticipation of exposure in known lead contaminated environments. elimination half-life 2.5–3.5 hours. dmsa can cross blood–brain barrier of mice, not of humans, limiting use extracting heavy metals parts of body other central nervous system.

dmsa facilitates urinary excretion of lead, , sufficiently aggressive treatment, can reduce lead content in brain. dmsa increases urinary excretion of copper , zinc. dmsa improved cognitive function in rats had been exposed lead, reduced cognitive function in rats had not been exposed lead.

the relative activities of series of novel monoalkyl esters of meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (miadmsa) have been examined agents mobilization of cadmium, lead , arsenic owing ability of these monoesters cross cell membranes. monoesters found more effective parent compound dmsa. complexes (monoesters of dmsa) seem penetrate cells (not possible in case of dmsa), helps in targeting intracellular sites in body , aids in removal of toxic metal ions in cytosol , organelles inside cell.
