a 14th-century mosaic (right) kahriye-cami or chora church in istanbul gives excellent view of range of costume late period. left, there soldier on guard, governor in 1 of large hats worn important officials, middle-ranking civil servant (holding register roll) in dalmatic wide border, embroidered, on long tunic, has border. comes higher-ranking soldier, carrying sword on untied belt or baldric. virgin , st joseph in normal iconographic dress, , behind st joseph queue of respectable citizens wait turn register. male hem lengths drop status of person increases. exposed legs have hose, , soldiers , citizens have foot-wrappings above, presumably sandals. citizens wear dalmatics wide border around neck , hem, not rich of middle-level official. other men perhaps wear hats if not in presence of governor. donor figure in same church, grand logothete theodore metochites, ran legal system , finances of empire, wears larger hat, keeps on whilst kneeling before christ (see gallery).
