somerton deep lock, completed in 1787


somerton farmed in open field system of 4 fields until william fermor secured enclosure act parliament in 1765. thereafter somerton s population grew, reaching 400 in 1821 census.


the stretch of oxford canal between banbury , tackley completed in 1787. runs along cherwell valley, , @ somerton passes between river , village. somerton deep lock built ⁄5 mile (1 km) north of village.


building of oxford , rugby railway between oxford , banbury began in 1845. time line opened great western railway had taken over. in somerton railway threads along valley between oxford canal , foot of hill on village stands, , bridge carries on road north aston. gwr opened station south of bridge in 1855; named somerton, renamed fritwell & somerton in 1907, although fritwell 2 miles (3 km) away. station attracted opening of public house, railway inn. british railways closed station in 1964. railway inn has since followed suit.


some of land on railway built belonged free school, of money gwr paid in compenstation spent on repairs school. in 19th century village population grew , school population grew it. in reorganisation of schools in 1930 free school became junior school , senior pupils somerton had go fritwell. school still open in 1950s has since closed.
