leeds growth in 19th century led mass migration city; resulted in many areas of city becoming overcrowded , many new houses being built. industrial revolution led increase in both working , middle classes, leading building of many new houses, aimed @ both classes. common form of housing built working classes back . back terrace houses built in largely working class districts of harehills, holbeck, hunslet, beeston , armley, whilst larger through terrace houses built middle classes in headingley , kirkstall. chapeltown developed affluent district of leeds, , boasts many large victorian villas, popularity of outer suburbs such roundhay towards late 20th century brought land values down in chapeltown , area fell decline.


in 1830 cost of building small back house in leeds between seventy , eighty pounds. average weekly rent between 2 , 4 shillings, fifth of average wages @ time.
