the national training school music building, later home royal college of music (1883–94) , royal college of organists (1903–91)


the college founded in 1883 replace short lived , unsuccessful national training school music (ntsm). school result of earlier proposal prince consort provide free musical training winners of scholarships under nationwide scheme. after many years delay established in 1876, arthur sullivan principal. conservatoires train young students musical career had been set in major european cities, in london long-established royal academy of music had not supplied suitable training professional musicians: in 1870 estimated fewer ten per cent of instrumentalists in london orchestras had studied @ academy. ntsm s aim, summarised in founding charter, was:



to establish united kingdom such school of music exists in many of principal continental countries, – school shall take rank conservatories of milan, paris, vienna, leipsic, brussels, , berlin, – school shall musical youth of great britain schools doing talented youth of italy, austria, france, germany, , belgium.



the school housed in new building in kensington gore, opposite west side of royal albert hall. building not large, having 18 practice rooms , no concert hall. in 2005 study of ntsm , replacement rcm, david wright observes building more suggestive of young ladies finishing school place serious training of professional musicians.


under sullivan, reluctant , ineffectual principal, ntsm failed provide satisfactory alternative royal academy, , 1880 committee of examiners comprising charles hallé, sir julius benedict, sir michael costa, henry leslie , otto goldschmidt reported school lacked executive cohesion . following year sullivan resigned, , replaced john stainer. in 2005 study of ntsm, wright comments:



like ram @ time, ntsm failed relate teaching professional need, , did not discriminate between education required turn out professional instrumentalists/singers , amateur/ social musicians; nor between elementary , advanced teachers. , because purpose unclear, provision.



even before 1880 report had become clear ntsm not fulfil role of national music conservatoire. 13 july 1878, meeting held @ marlborough house, london under presidency of prince of wales, purpose of taking consideration advancement of art of music, , establishing college of music on permanent , more extended basis of existing institution. original plan merge royal academy of music , national training school of music single, enhanced organisation. ntsm agreed, after prolonged negotiations royal academy refused enter proposed scheme.


in 1881, george grove leading instigator, , support of prince of wales, draft charter drawn successor body ntsm. royal college of music occupied premises home ntsm, , opened there on 7 may 1883. grove appointed first director. there 50 scholars elected competition , 42 fee-paying students.
