early history
ontc traces history 1902 passage of temiskaming , northern ontario railway act, received royal assent on march 17. temiskaming , northern ontario railway commission (tnorc) oversee construction , operation of temiskaming , northern ontario railway (t&no). sod turned less 2 months later ontario s commissioner of public works, honourable francis robert latchford, @ trout lake on outskirts of north bay; north bay being site of first spike driven in construction of canadian pacific railway (cpr) 20 years previous.

the railway changed name in 1946 present ontario northland transportation commission. use of word transportation instead of railway in commission s new name reflected expanded mandate organization.
enabling legislation in 1946 allowed ontc acquire, construct, , operate boats, hotels, tourist resorts, , restaurants. in 1960 purchased trucking firm, star transfer.
the railway still operated today commission, operates other transport modes, including bus motor coach services along toronto-north bay-timmins-hearst , toronto-sudbury-timmins highway corridors. in 2016 motor coach started operating between sudbury , ottawa. formerly operated regional airline named norontair , telecommunications company named ontera.
proposed divestment
on march 23, 2012, ontario government announced begin wind down ontc, citing increased costs government , stagnant ridership. passenger train service between toronto , cochrane (the northlander) terminated , replaced additional bus service, , assets of corporation sold off.
