with announcement of rebuilding of lansdowne road, new venue required stage republic of ireland s home internationals. stadium in ireland deemed suitable stage international football 84,500 capacity croke park, home of gaelic athletic association (gaa). accommodate this, gaa temporarily relaxed rule governing playing of foreign games on property. initially, 4 uefa euro 2008 qualifying group d matches played @ croke park in 2007, resulting in 2 wins , 2 draws. gaa agreed allow fai use until end of 2008, , later extended permission until completion of aviva stadium. hill 16 end of croke park terrace, means lansdowne road before it, capacity of stadium reduced around 74,500 competitive matches temporary seating must used.
prior 1980s, republic of ireland played home games @ dalymount park, home of bohemians, progressively more games played @ lansdowne road following safety review reduced dalymount s capacity. last international match played there against morocco in 1990. republic of ireland have played home matches in tolka park (twice) , rds arena in dublin @ mardyke , flower lodge grounds in cork. these games in cork were, until 2009, 2 home irish internationals played outside of dublin. during construction of aviva stadium, 2 friendly games played in thomond park, limerick, in 2009. 2 further friendlies played in rds arena in may 2010. ireland played friendly against belarus in cork s 7,000 capacity turners cross stadium in may 2016.
