schuyler mansion
schuyler mansion, 32 catherine street. philip schuyler built seven-by-four-bay georgian mansion in undeveloped woodland near city s south boundary in 1761. chose of interior finishes on extended trips england. during revolutionary war, schuyler had captured british general john burgoyne , staff houseguests; george washington later pay visit. after period of use orphanage has been state historic site since 1917.

apartment building @ 82–84 morton avenue. 1 of few residential structures in district built in 20th century, arts , crafts three-story brick structure features projecting bays on either side multipaned casement windows. 2 main entrances in center feature double doors in arched entryway.
building @ 395 south pearl street. three-story three-bay building of brick laid in flemish bond projecting cornice, remodeled storefront , stone lintels dates 1832, making 1 of few survivors district s pre-immigration era.
building @ 465 south pearl street. historical marker out front @ second avenue intersection commemorates 1885 birth of daniel p. o connell, boss of city s political machine thrived late 20th century, in four-story, four-bay brick italianate commercial-residential building built in 1875. uncle dan s diner, in ground floor, takes name him.
building @ 80 morton avenue. three-story, three-bay yellow brick structure dating 20th century shows georgian revival influence. facade features stone quoins, splayed voussoir lintels on one-over-one double-hung sash, , wooden bracketed cornice.
engine co. no. 5 firehouse
engine co. no. 5, 88 fourth avenue. former firehouse first serving south end when built in 1905 house horse-drawn firefighting vehicles. ornate two-story three-by-five-bay brick building on sandstone foundation stone trim. on north (front) facade original hinged wooden doors today outreach center st. john s/st. ann s across street.
foley row, 159–169 franklin street. row of 6 attached greek revival gabled timber frame houses, each 3 bays wide brick foundations, simple wooden lintels , clapboard siding, dates 1851. 1 of few groups of properties in districts built speculatively developer rather ultimate residents.
german evangelical protestant church , rectory, 76–78 clinton street. spire of 1857 gothic revival brick , stone church symbol of south end , german immigrant population. south 1926 rectory, brick, 2 stories high , 4 bays wide. west (front) facade features stone trim, strips of casement windows on both stories , oblique peak along roof parapet in stone cross has been set.
jared holt wax works, 111 broad street. curved parapet reaching 8 feet (2.4 m) above roofline @ center decorative highlight of brick industrial building last years of 19th century. has been converted housing.
mt. calvary baptist church
john a. howe branch library, 105 schuyler street. georgian revival style used 1929 building complement nearby schuyler mansion. one-story, nine-bay structure of brick in flemish bond on raised basement, set off stone water table projecting central entrance pavilion, narrow arched palladian windows set 12-over-23 double-hung sash, separated pilasters topped scroll-carved stones. on roof stone balustrade carved pineapple finials. inside many of original oak finishings , furniture. children s room has fireplace stone tiles telling story of rip van winkle.
mt. calvary baptist church, 58 alexander street. built in late 1860s, remaining wood-frame church in city of albany. two-story clapboard-sided building gabled roof slopes @ either side of, creating broad overhanging eaves along side elevations. on north (front) face, met @ corners projecting wooden pilasters, suggesting lingering greek revival influence. lancet arched windows complemented gabled front entrance porch. atop small conical steeple wooden cross @ peak.
mt. zion baptist church
mount zion baptist church, 86 schuyler street. south end resident charles heidrich designed , built victorian gothic structure in 1893. brick structure has stone trim , 2 octagonal front turrets flanking central bell tower, echoed gabled central portion on second story stained glass rosette window , gabled hood on main entrance supported 2 smooth round ionic columns on either side.
public bath no. 2, 90 fourth avenue. adjacent engine co. 5 firehouse, built @ same time. two-story buff brick , stone building pediment along bracketed cornice on main entrance , round-arched windows. above entrance recessed porch; inside retains of original heating system , other features. closed @ end of 2010 after mayor gerald jennings vetoed budget amendment keep open, first such action in 17 years on job @ time.
public school no. 1, 71–77 bassett street. 2½-story 15-bay brick former school building, dating 1889, uses moorish revival style, 1 of rare appearances in albany. evident in recessed main entry, middle eastern-style segmented arch surrounded glass tiles school sign , gate of ornate iron, considered of best architectural detailing in city.
public school no. 17, 43 second avenue. no longer in use, three-story ten-by-four-bay brick structure built slope @ top of stephen street, revealing brownstone foundation @ north , east sides. brick pilasters rise corbelled flat roof unusual projecting round arches. along south facade 2 gabled entrance porches arches have radiating stone voussoirs. when built in 1875 first major institutional building in south end.
st. john s/st ann s church complex, 88 fourth avenue. gothic brick church stone trim, gabled side tower , arcaded eastern porch oldest of these three, dating 1867. in decade after it, neighboring victorian gothic rectory built, after fire destroyed original one. brick stone courses, recessed windows , entrance tower peaked roof in polychrome slate. completing set st. john s center, in brick stone trim, built convent in 1908.
sunrise tavern, 48 delaware street. 1930 construction date of two-story brick commercial-residential building makes youngest contributing property in district. features corner entry on half-timbered storefront (now church) corner entry traffic on elizabeth street. second floor of north facade has oriel window.
warehouse @ 50 morton avenue. east facade of industrial building, dating 1885, decorated 4 italianate rowhouses. have bracketed wooden cornices, ornate cast iron window , door hoods , recessed doors. interior has original freight elevator , open spaces.
