the main external partners in water sector germany, united states , world bank.


germany

germany provides financial cooperation through kfw development bank, technical assistance through giz , federal institute geosciences , natural resources, bgr. german cooperation in water sector focused on urban areas, in particular on kabul , herat, balkh, kunduz, takhar , badakhshan provinces in northern , northeastern afghanistan. bgr supported groundwater monitoring , modeling in kabul basin training of local partners 2003 2006.


united states

through usaid, united states supports urban water supply through commercialization of afghanistan water , sanitation activity (cawsa) project since 2008. usaid works in northern afghan city of mazar-e-sharif, gardez , ghazni in east jalalabad.


world bank

the main vehicle world bank support water supply in afghanistan national solidarity programme (see above under rural water supply), using funds various countries channeled through international development association or afghanistan reconstruction trust fund. in addition, in 2006 world bank approved us$40m grant support urban water supply project improve water supply in kabul. however, 2010 no funds disbursed , infrastructure component of project had been cancelled. replaced pilot project support small private operators, connecting 500 customers in 1 area of kabul.
