during mid-1970s, french aircraft company socata commenced design work on become tb family of general aircraft; key ambition of new product line entirely replace firm s existing , highly successful rallye series of aircraft. intended, throughout 1979, production of rallye family began draw down production of new family; initial entry models of designated tb-9 tampico , tb-10 tobago. on 18 december 1980, improved model of aircraft, designated tb20, awarded type certification french aviation authorities. during match 1981, first delivery of production tb20 completed german customer. various improved models of tb series subsequently developed.
socata adopted straightforward assembly philosophy @ final assembly facility in tarbes, choosing complete given aircraft after having received order it. basic airframes produced in advanced , finished upon order, allowing customer-specified modifications , optional equipment installed per demands. while type completed upon single assembly line @ facility, models, low , top end alike, finished upon same line. @ start of 1993, socata manufacturing around 12 aircraft of tb series per month, middle of year, had dipped 8 aircraft per month.
during 1990s, improved model of tb family, designated tb20 trinidad developed. around 2000, aircraft in tb series underwent modernisation; reflect upgrade, letters gt (standing generation two) applied applicable models. gt versions feature enlarged cabin , various aerodynamic improvements; noticeable differences between first , second generation models redesigned wing tips, noticeably rounder upon older models, , shape of vertical stabiliser, curved on lower front on gt models. styling of rear windows have changed, being more blended fuselage on gt models; optional three-bladed hartzell, reduced cabin noise , increased ground clearance, made available. during february 2000, socata officially launched generation 2 range, having received major order 79 aircraft west coast distributor new avex.
