early years

robert dale houston born claude , essie (née walters) houston in seminary, small town in covington county, mississippi. delivered midwife on family s kitchen table. houstons thereafter moved nearby collins, county seat, claude houston entered christian ministry. young dale began piano lessons in sixth grade, family financial difficulties halted training after 3 months , self-taught on, honing skills playing , singing in church.


at age 18, recorded lonely man . in 1960, while performing in baton rouge, record executive sam montel (sam montalbano) caught act in local bar. montel declared him pretty writer , signed him compose exclusively label. houston wrote , recorded lonely man , bird broken wing , , s . none successful.

in 1963, houston working in bar in ferriday, louisiana, town near natchez, mississippi. montel approached houston teaming female singer, grace broussard (born 1939) of prairieville, louisiana near baton rouge. both had been singing in area bistros several years - grace brother, van broussard (who later released album on bayou boogie label).

houston appeared on dick clark s american bandstand. in autumn 1963, houston , broussard toured caravan of stars. group, included brian hyland , bobby vee, standing on street corner on main street in dallas waving @ john f. kennedy on fateful day. moments later, presidential limousine turned right onto, ironically, houston street, left onto elm street, president killed , governor john b. connally wounded. stars had gone hotel rooms after waving kennedy , did not hear assassination until several hours later.


the popularity of beatles, combined personal problems between 2 performers, broussard s homesickness, , serious illness landed houston in hospital, caused duo separate in 1965. grace returned singing brother.


death

dale houston died on september 27, 2007 of heart failure @ wesley medical center in hattiesburg, mississippi, age 67. @ funeral troy shondell gave musical tribute, , interment in smyrna cemetery in collins, mississippi.


honors

in 1995, dale , grace, having been reunited, honored in mississippi through resolutions of covington county board of supervisors , town of seminary. in 2000, houston received louisiana living legends award public broadcasting service. earlier, inducted texas music hall of fame , gulf coast music hall of fame, both in 1998.


in 2007, newly elected louisiana secretary of state jay dardenne announced houston , broussard, along john fred , playboys being named delta music museum hall of fame. garner such honor, 1 must have national or international recognition, said museum director, judith bingham. dale , grace performed @ festival in ferriday, houston had attended ninth , tenth grades decades earlier @ ferriday high school. in october 2007, dale , grace inducted louisiana music hall of fame.
