liberty turns evade israeli torpedo boats


as torpedo boats rapidly approached, captain mcgonagle ordered sailor proceed machine gun mount 51 , open fire. however, noticed boats appeared flying israeli flag, , realized there possibility of aircraft having been israeli , attack had been conducted in error . captain mcgonagle ordered man @ gun mount 51 hold fire, short burst fired @ torpedo boats before man able understand order. mcgonagle observed machine gun mount 53 began firing @ center torpedo boat @ same time gun mount 51 fired, , fire extremely effective , blanketed area , center torpedo boat . machine gun mount 53 located on starboard amidships side, behind pilot house. mcgonagle not see or mount 53 starboard wing of bridge . so, sent mr. lucas around port side of bridge, around skylights, see if tell [seaman] quintero, whom [he] believed gunner on machine gun 53, hold fire .


ensign lucas reported in few minutes in effect saw no 1 @ mount 53 . lucas, had left command bridge during air attack , returned assist captain mcgonagle before torpedo hit ship, believed gunfire sound ammunition cooking off, due nearby fire. prior time, after torpedo hit ship, lucas had granted request quintero fire @ torpedo boats before heat nearby fire chased him gun mount 53. (mcgonagle later testified, @ court of inquiry, extremely effective firing event had observed.)


after coming under fire, torpedo boats returned fire cannons, killing liberty s helmsman. torpedo boats launched 5 torpedoes @ liberty. @ 1235z (2:35 local time) torpedo hit liberty on starboard side forward of superstructure, creating 40 ft (12 m) wide hole in had been former cargo hold converted ship s research spaces , killing 25 servicemen, of them intelligence section, , wounding dozens. has been said torpedo hit major hull frame absorbed of energy; crew members reported if torpedo had missed frame liberty have split in two. other 4 torpedoes missed ship.


the torpedo boats closed in , strafed ship s hull cannons , machine guns. according crewmen, torpedo boats fired @ damage control parties , sailors preparing life rafts launch. (see disputed details below.) life raft floated ship picked t-203 , found bear navy markings. t-204 circled liberty, , oren spotted designation gtr-5, saw no flag. took until 3:30 pm establish ship s identity. shortly before liberty s identity confirmed, saratoga launched 8 aircraft armed conventional weapons towards liberty. after ship s identity confirmed, general staff notified , apology sent naval attaché castle. aircraft approaching liberty recalled saratoga.
