the dunfermline , queensferry railway system

in 1861 possibility of queensferry route seemed have been revived, , 3 bills went parliament authorised such line. 1 ep&dr s own line, run dunfermline; independent line run dunfermline join edinburgh , glasgow railway; , e&gr proposed line own main line dunfermline. these 3 lines similar, , involved ferry crossing @ queensferry. ferry might involve roll-on roll-off arrangements @ burntisland, , maybe there might bridge, crossing blackness charlestown, little west. residents of dunfermline didn t want might happen, wanted happen now. north british railway had absorbed ep&dr in 1862, , brought considerable additional financial power matter, yet seemingly without decisive action. in 1864 fife herald reported that:

as yet, there no preparation laying trunk line between edinburgh , dunfermline , northwards perth. appears north british company contemplating abandonment of route queensferry, , adoption of higher firth means of bridge. report of directors says, cause has dictated caution in commencement of expensive works on southern portion of dunfermline railway. conviction has gradually become stronger, bridge on firth of forth, @ no great distance queensferry, might erected without extravagant cost... in present [parliamentary] session, 2 bills have passed second reading in house of commons, each containing application power erect bridge... advantage, northern terminus of each of these bridges abut upon company s railway @ charleston, [sic] , [would] open immediate communication edinburgh , glasgow fife means of existing lines perth , dundee via dunfermline...

every 1 reads spell out real meaning--the abandonment of queensferry route--and consequent abandonment of whole design of edinburgh, dunfermline , perth railway, although has received sanction of parliament. bridge across firth @ charleston! such undertaking cost million of money, , act of folly unlikely perpetrated covey of sharp-witted railway directors.

the nbr firmly committed forth bridge @ charlestown in 1865, project still on burner company gave tay bridge priority. thomas bouch had designed crossing, involve 2 suspension bridge sections. when tay bridge suffered partial collapse in tay bridge disaster in 1879, bouch s work naturally suspended. in 1882 authorising bill passed in parliament forth bridge in place today.
