genesis (before 1913)
many football clubs constituted in caen @ end of 19th century : union sportive des étudiants de caen, founded in 1892, , union athlétique du lycée malherbe (ualm), founded in 1892 or 1895, club sportif caennais, founded in november 1899. these clubs participated in editions of football championship organised union des sociétés françaises de sports athlétiques.
in 1907, former members of ualm created club malherbe caennais, best club in lower normandy. in 1909 , 1911, several friendlies matches organised between selection of players caen , english club of st albans city f.c..

first professional team of stade malherbe, 1934–1935 season
the stade malherbe caennais officially founded on 17 november 1913 merger of club sportif caennais , club malherbe caennais. multi-sport athletic club, adopted malherbe , striped jersey of cmc, , red , blue colours of csc. club had own facilities – stade de venoix – inherited cmc.
the football team of cmc, engaged in league in lower normandy, changed name after start of season. winning competition, stade malherbe recorded first title in first year of existence. qualified finals of 1914 usfsa football championship, caen eliminated in 1/8 final union sportive servannaise : after draw in first game (3–3) had forfeit second. world war stopped competitions. thirty-nine members of club killed in fighting, including former captain eugène lesomptier.
in 1919, usfsa championship replaced regional championships organised french football federation, called division d honneur. stade malherbe, reinforced move caen of former french international eugène maës, won 6 times championship of lower normandy between 1920 , 1928, unable compete major upper normandy clubs, le havre ac , fc rouen. since 1919–20, caen participated in coupe de france fell in round of 32 in 1921 , 1922. in 1929, 2 division d honneur leagues of normandy merged , stade malherbe promoted year after. best final standing 5th in 1933.

the club returned division d honneur of normandy. won last edition before world war ii in 1938–39, , 2 first after ww2 in 1946 , 1947.
an important amateur club (1948–1985)
in 1948, stade malherbe joined newly founded championnat de france amateur, third level of french football. soonly considered lord in cfa, caen unable win championship, unlike regional rival quevilly, despite successive calls former french international players coaches : jules vandooren, jean prouff, andre grillon, jean vincent , oliver celestin.
stade malherbe made known repeated feats in coupe de france in 1950s : french champion stade de reims (2–1) , top teams racing club de france (3–2) , rc lens defeated in january 1953, 1956 , 1961. in 1958, caen pushed fc nantes play 5 games decide : first 3 games resulting in 0–0 draws, fourth stopped, fifth saw nantes win 1–0. through success caen won challenge france-football rewarding best amateur team in coupe de france in 1956 , 1961. undermined instability of coaches , presidents , precarious financial health, stade malherbe weakened gradually , relegated twice (in 1962 , 1965) in division d honneur, regained place in cfa.
in 1970, cfa removed , division 2 enlarged 48 teams. during 1970s, caen evolved between d3 , d2, failed stabilise. jacques mouilleron became coach in 1973. in 1975, club won first national title : west group of division 3. stade malherbe named best amateur club france-football, jean-paul bouffandeau , jean-paul pottier french amateur players of year in 1975 , 1976. 3 years later, caen fell d3.
pierre mankowski hired player-coach in 1983. led stade malherbe d3 top of d2 in few seasons, , pushed adopt professional status in 1985.
from d2 european cup (1985–1993)
sm caen has been professional football club since 1985. stated objective of mankowski bring caen in first division. helped team improving, first in defence in attack. caen finished sixth of d2 in 1986 , second in 1987, notable scorers philippe prieur , Éric pécout. caen did season stade de venoix inviolate place bowed in front of cannes in playoffs. caen succeeded in playoffs following season, dealing olympique lyonnais , chamois niortais f.c., relegated d1.
in 1988 stade malherbe discovered division 1. despite many departures, including coach mankowski (replaced robert nouzaret) , 6 first losses, caen got maintain in extremis, 1 point ahead of rc strasbourg, advent of promising striker fabrice divert. stade malherbe confirmed, not without difficulties, performance following season.
with new coach, daniel jeandupeux, team largely restructured. in 1990–91, caen took place in first half of division 1, excellent results obtained in venoix. however, press revealed in late 1991 club close bankruptcy. regional businesses , local government bail out club, carries brilliant 1991–92 season. stade malherbe finished fifth , qualified first (and far only) time uefa cup. stéphane paille scored 15 goals during season. first round of 1992–93 uefa cup, caen had face real zaragoza. normans won 3–2 1st leg lost 2–0 in spain. despite goals of xavier gravelaine, sm caen finished season relatively disappointing eleventh rank.

in 2003–04 season, caen finished 2nd in ligue 2, gaining promotion ligue 1. relegated on last day of 2004–05 ligue 1 season, finishing in 18th place despite positive results, including surprise 3–2 away win @ marseille. main highlight of season making final of coupe de la ligue first time in history. chance @ major trophy eluded them however, lost 2–1 strasbourg in final.
on 25 may 2007, sm caen obtained promotion ligue 1 after victory in last game @ libourne (1–2). in 2008–09 season, team once again relegated ligue 2 after losing 1–0 @ home bordeaux, won championship next season , came ligue 1.
in 2010–11 season, caen got off highly impressive start defeating defending champions marseille 2–1 away on first day of season, following 3–2 home win on previous season s champions league semi-finalists lyon.
in 2013–14 season, caen in ligue 2, won promotion ligue 1 2014–15 season. part of promotion battle, drew crucial match nîmes in may 2014. 1–1 result favourable nîmes battling avoid relegation. result raised suspicions, , in november 2014, caen chairman fortin arrested, amongst several others, on suspicion of match fixing. finally, cleared in march 2015.
