gimnazija mostar presently operates under 2 separate secondary school curricula , in 2 mutually intelligible language varieties, bosnian , croatian, sports , few classes combined. though intended integrate subjects or @ least science ones (biology, chemistry, information technology, mathematics , physics), idea of unification fiercely opposed local politicians, croat officials felt national identity being threatened. nevertheless, integration has been achieved extent in has been called rare social experiment . students welcomed desegregation.


located in centre of town, next former front line has divided town 2 spheres since war, 1 of first schools in post-war bosnia , herzegovina in integration of students different ethnic groups implemented, , such school in mostar.


as of 2013, school attended 360 bosniaks , 290 bosnian croats. there 2 six-hour sessions day, first session reserved third- , fourth-year students, , second session younger students. students both groups mingle during recess, considerable intercommunal flirting reported. nationalist politicians still promote idea of segregation, education minister greta kuna declaring apples , peaches should not mix .

in 2006, queen noor of jordan, president of united world colleges, opened united world college in mostar, housed on gymnasium s third floor.
