lieutenant general thomas blamey given command of second aif on 13 october 1939 , retained throughout war. such, answerable directly minister of defence, rather military board. given charter based on given major general william throsby bridges in 1914. part of charter required second aif kept together, series of political , military crises resulted in divisions fighting together, individual divisions, brigades , battalions deployed in different sectors or different theatres. resulted in conflicts british commanders, particularly commander-in-chief middle east, general sir claude auchinleck, notably on relief of tobruk.


the 6th , 7th divisions departed far east in january 1942, followed 9th division in february 1943. last aif units, 3 forestry companies, returned via united states in late 1943. units of second aif thereafter deployed south west pacific theatre, although individuals remained in other theatres on exchange or liaison duty, such vernon sturdee, head of australian military mission in washington, d.c. 1942 1944.


a controversial decision of menzies government senior commands in blamey s 6th division restricted militia officers. upset many pmf officers. however, when 7th division formed in may 1940, regular officer, lieutenant general john lavarack appointed command it. blamey appointed 2 regulars, major generals vernon sturdee , henry wynter command 8th , 9th divisions, wynter became ill , sturdee appointed chief of general staff following death of general sir brudenell white in 1940 canberra air disaster. commands went 2 cmf soldiers, major generals gordon bennett , leslie morshead.

the second aif s main strength consisted of corps headquarters , 5 divisions:



6th division
7th division
8th division
9th division
1st armoured division

divisions numbered 1st 5th militia divisions, had been raised during inter-war years , perpetuated numerical designations of first aif units had fought during first world war. in addition, 10th through 12th , 2nd , 3rd armoured divisions militia formations.

there 3 brigades in each division. brigades numbered 16 onwards not confused extant militia brigades. there @ first 4 infantry battalions per brigade reduced three.


units of second aif prefixed numbers 2/ (pronounced second ) distinguish militia units. such unit did not exist in first aif or militia, 2/ not used, later adopted identifying unit of second aif.


after war japan began, large numbers of experienced aif officers posted militia units. consequence, units in more 75% of personnel aif volunteers permitted call aif units. november 1944, 20 of militia s 33 infantry battalions entitled call aif. @ time army 423,000 strong, of whom 25,000 women, , 307,000 members of aif.


in south west pacific, army found force structure unbalanced, preponderance of operational units , grave shortage of logistical units. army faced government requests release manpower industry, , later discharge long-serving personnel. remedied disbanding operational units.


from 1 may 1945, army s monthly quota 420 men , 925 women. wastage greater this, units disbanded reinforcements.
