umar ordered great scholar of madinah, abu bakr ibn hazm write down hadiths of muhammad , umar ibn al-khattab, particularly narrated aisha. had these hadiths collected in books circulated around umayyad empire. although these books lost today, commentaries on them ibn al-nadim reveals organized books of fiqh, such muwatta of imam malik, first large compilation of hadiths. imam malik himself followed general plan of books of hadith ordered umar.


the classification of hadith sahih, sound or authentic; hasan, good; , da if, weak, utilized in hadith scholarship ali ibn al-madini (161–234 ah). later, al-madini s student muhammad al-bukhari (810–870) authored collection, known sahih bukhari, commonly accepted sunni scholars authentic collection of hadith, followed of student muslim ibn al-hajjaj. al-bukhari s methods of testing hadiths , isnads seen exemplary of developing methodology of hadith scholarship.
