club career
cork city

long came through cork city youth structure, before signing on professional terms in january 2008. played cork city teams won fai youth cup, munster youth cup , fai futsal cup in 2009. shortly after, centre half made senior city debut away st patricks athletic coming on second half substitute. long made first senior start on 19 july 2009 in home friendly against ipswich town, partnering dan murray in defence.


it reported long travelled on preston north end trial, whilst there, there interest league 1 sides leeds united , charlton athletic , premier league side burnley.


burnley

on 26 november 2009 announced burnley had fought off competition both everton , celtic youngster s signature, , fly in meet squad, not able sign full contract until january transfer window opens. 6 figure deal agreed keep long @ burnley until june 2013. on 25 january 2010, confirmed long had signed burnley.


accrington stanley (loan)

on 15 october 2010, long joined league 2 side accrington stanley on month-long loan deal. has since had loan extended till 2011 after excellent performances in heart of defence. made debut club in 2–3 defeat rotherham united, sent off after 17 minutes foul on adam le fondre. returned burnley on 18 january 2011 after cracking bone in foot during match against cheltenham town 2–1 win.


on 31 january 2011 confirmed long had returned on loan @ stanley remainder of season returned burnley on 23 may @ end of loan spell having made 17 appearances.


on 5 august 2011, confirmed had re-joined stanley on six-month loan deal. first spell on loan @ accrington stanley, long maintain first team status , scored first goal of career in 2–2 draw against plymouth argyle on 8 october 2011. long score against bristol rovers, torquay united , macclesfield town. re-joined burnley on 5 january, having made 26 appearances.


rochdale (loan)

on 27 january 2012, long joined football league 1 side rochdale on initial one-month emergency loan, linked former accrington manager john coleman. after playing 4 match 2 clean sheets during run of 2 wins , draw, long extended loan spell @ rochdale until end of april. long continued play in first team club, club relegated.


portsmouth (loan)

on 18 august 2012, long joined football league 1 side portsmouth on one-month emergency loan. made debut in same day, starting in 1–1 draw against bournemouth. in third appearance club in 4–2 loss, long received red card after second bookable offence. after missing 1 match, long made return in 3–0 win on crawley town on 9 september 2012 , made last appearance in 2–1 loss against walsall 8 days later. match against walsall proved last match suffered injury , loan spell not renewed.


return burnley

he scored first goal burnley in 4-3 fa cup defeat @ southampton on 4 january 2014. on 1 january 2015, long made premier league debut burnley in 3–3 draw away newcastle united. replaced injured jason shackell in 17th minute, 20 minutes later replaced steven reid after suffering injury of own, becoming third burnley player taken off injured in match @ st james park.


barnsley f.c. (loan)

in november 2015, after regaining full fitness following cruciate knee injury, joined league 1 side barnsley on one-month loan deal. scored late winner against oldham athletic on debut side 2-1 win. in second game sent off against peterborough united.he went on barnsley reach johnstones paint trophy final after converted penalty in penalty shoot out of semi final last touch of ball barnsley returned burnley following day.


milton keynes dons (loan)

on 24 march 2016, long joined fellow championship side milton keynes dons on loan remainder of 2015–16 season.
