operational history
pre-world war i
upon completion, hms commonwealth delivered portsmouth dockyard on 14 march 1905, placed in reserve. went full commission on 9 may 1905 @ devonport dockyard service in atlantic fleet. collided battleship hms albemarle near lagos on 11 february 1907, sustaining hull , bulkhead damage. began repairs @ devonport dockyard later month.

while under repair, commonwealth transferred channel fleet in march 1907, recommissioning actual service fleet on 28 may 1907 after completion of repairs. suffered mishap in august 1907 when ran aground, , under repair @ devonport dockyard until october. under fleet reorganization on 24 march 1909, channel fleet became 2nd division, home fleet, , commonwealth became home fleet unit in division. underwent refit @ devonport october 1910 june 1911.
as result of fleet reorganization in may 1912, commonwealth , 7 of sisters of king edward vii class (africa, britannia, dominion, hibernia, hindustan, king edward vii, , zealandia) assigned form 3rd battle squadron, assigned home fleet. squadron detached mediterranean in november 1912 because of first balkan war (october 1912 – may 1913); arrived @ malta on 27 november 1912 , subsequently participated in blockade international force of montenegro , occupation of scutari. squadron returned united kingdom in 1913 , rejoined home fleet on 27 june 1913
world war i
upon outbreak of world war i, 3rd battle squadron assigned grand fleet. used supplement grand fleet s cruisers on northern patrol. on 2 november 1914, squadron detached reinforce channel fleet , rebased @ portland. returned grand fleet on 13 november 1914.
commonwealth served in grand fleet until april 1916. underwent refit december 1914 february 1915. of 1 july 1915, 2nd flagship of 3rd battle squadron rest of year. during sweeps fleet, , sister ships steamed @ heads of divisions of far more valuable dreadnoughts, protect dreadnoughts watching mines or being first strike them.
on 29 april 1916, 3rd battle squadron rebased @ sheerness, , on 3 may 1916 separated grand fleet, being transferred nore command. commonwealth remained there squadron until august 1917.
gunnery training ship
commonwealth left 3rd battle squadron in august 1917 , paid off undergo extensive refit @ portsmouth dockyard, during became king edward vii-class ship fitted updated features common among dreadnoughts, including torpedo bulges, tripod foremast, , director , fire control system; had 6-inch (152-mm) gun batteries removed , 4 6-inch (152-mm) guns installed 1 deck higher. when refit completed in april 1918, in effect advanced predreadnought battleship in world. recommissioned on 16 april 1918 service on northern patrol, transferred grand fleet on 21 august 1918, made full use of updated equipment in service seagoing gunnery training ship based @ invergordon. last seagoing british predreadnought still armed guns, continued in service after world war ended, training crews in use of weapons used on modern dreadnought battleships.
