diop did not have interest in acting, rather planned pursue career in textiles, parachutist. recommendation of friend made diop think more acting , arts, , prompted diop reach out josephine baker. after correspondence, baker invited diop visit in france, diop had decline due cost. diop frequented cine-club in dakar, exposed french , american films, , later enrolled @ ecole des arts de dakar when sixteen, took night courses , studied under french actor robert fontaine (who later starred in black girl). diop worked seamstress during day.
