original broadway production

following success of fantasticks, project composing team s first broadway. original score operatic in scope, , when show s running time in boston proved long, creative team began trimming numbers, discarding many heard in finished product. after 2 previews, production, directed joseph anthony , choreographed agnes de mille, opened on october 24, 1963, @ broadhurst theatre, ran 330 performances. cast included robert horton starbuck, inga swenson lizzie, , stephen douglass file, geer, lesley ann warren, , gretchen cryer in supporting roles. sets oliver smith , costumes motley. show received 4 tony award nominations won none. rca victor released original broadway cast recording of production on november 3, 1963, 1 recording in stereo; 1 in mono. both recordings identical; each having 16 tracks. rca victor released recording on compact disc on june 12, 1990, 1 track-- overture not heard on previous lp recordings.

the first , west end production, directed charles blackwell, recreated original broadway production closely , opened on february 8, 1967, @ palace theatre, ran 101 performances.


1992 new york city opera revival

a 1992 new york city opera production, directed scott ellis , choreographed susan stroman, starred karen ziemba lizzie. score heard particular advantage here, opera company orchestra appreciably larger conventional broadway pit orchestra. 2-cd studio recording released jay records on october 21, 1997, features ziemba, walter charles, ron raines, kristin chenoweth, , schmidt , jones. recording based on 1992 new york city opera production, , includes 5 bonus tracks new york city opera production.


1999 concert production

in 1999, concert version staged @ fortune theatre in london ian marshall fisher discovering lost musicals charitable trust, louise gold lizzie. production piano accompaniment used, , cast unmiked.


2007 broadway revival

the roundabout theater company presented new production of show, opened on may 9, 2007, @ studio 54, , closed on july 29, 2007, after 94 performances , 27 previews. production team headed director lonny price , designer santo loquasto. joined lighting designer christopher akerlind, sound designer dan moses schreier, , musical arranger david krane along musical supervisor/director, paul gemignani, has worked closely price on various stage projects in past. cast featured audra mcdonald lizzie, steve kazee bill starbuck, , john cullum h.c. curry. mcdonald won drama desk award outstanding actress in musical , nominated tony award performance. ben brantley wrote of mcdonald: possible performance good? audra mcdonald brings such breadth of skill , depth of feeling roundabout theater company revival of 110 in shade threatens burst seams of small, homey musical. ravishing of voice , olympian of stature, she’s overwhelming presence in underwhelming show.


the revival garnered 4 additional tony nominations, failed win any. in june 2010, mcdonald reprised tony-nominated role in two-week fundraising production of show hale center theater in orem, utah. recording of production released on june 12, 2007, ps classics. drops overture adds 2 tracks of dialogue.
